Review of King George’s - Accident & Emergency
8th May 2024

I am filling this in on behalf of my mum, the staff in ED were great, so kind. The department was extremely busy so my mum was in a corridor receiving treatment for about 7 hours after which a bay was found for her. I can’t fault this hospital, so far my mum’s care has been wonderful. Ambulance staff were also extremely kind and caring.

Suggested improvements
Less time waiting in corridor would be nice.

The nurses were good but there were only one doctor available at A&E which was unacceptable!

Suggested improvements
Communication is very important. Keep us patients informed that only one doctor available I stead of keeping us waiting over 12 hours .

The staff were amazing, they were overwhelmed and under so much pressure, but were kind and considerate at all times. They deserve much better pay and conditions

Suggested improvements
Employ more staff

Lack of communication from all staff on waiting time to be seen and up dates whilst waiting. Staff Nurse was rude and wasn't prepared to answer questions, demanded a disabled person move from one chair to another despite not interfering with care. Did not see a Dr in the department despite constant requests, one Dr declined to even speak or find out who was dealing with the patient. Did not listen to the patient's family, some staff just seemed to be standing around doing nothing. More security staff and police presence than medical staff. Staff seemed more concerned on stopping ambulance crews arrival than looking after patients. Overall a extremely disappointing and distressing visit to A&E

Suggested improvements
Communication either verbally or on a notice board on anticipated wait times, keep patients informed. Organisational skills needs great improvement. Allocate a nurse/HCA to a small group of patients so they can monitor them and keep informed of wait time, help them if they need to go to the toilet, sick bowls etc. Try to ascertain if a patient can be treated in a chair rather than the use of a bed. Security/policy presence should be limited to aggressive/violent patients not for management of ambulance crews. A&E is small and therefore needs to be better organised, controlled, if no further room for ambulance admittance inform central despatch advise no further room and not to keep sending patients. Consider KGH for non-major/critical incidences, minors only due to small scale A&E. Maybe look at improvements implemented at Queen's A&E and copy their changes but on a smaller scale.

I was made to wait up to 13 hours before seeing the doctor. I was in the waiting area the entire time so I didn’t even get to rest in a bed or a ward during this time. I was severely sick so this made me feel even worse rather than better. One staff member was very abrupt and sadly gave me no update so in the end I had to discharge myself and go private to get my medication and care. Really disappointed with the ridiculous waiting time from this hospital and no updates or comfortable waiting area. Will not be going here again despite it being my local. Others also waiting over 11 hours with chest pain, elderly were in the corridors with bed sores as I heard a nurse mention that they had gained them whilst being kept waiting in the corridors!! Did not feel safe or comfortable and went home feeling I’d wasted my time, despite feeling awful with severe dehydration and a viral infection. I’m vulnerable with a pre existing health condition so should have been seen much sooner. Had to wait way longer than should ever be acceptable.

Suggested improvements
Reduce Waiting times Updates from staff members Kindness and respect from nurses Add comfortable waiting area!! Air conditioning it was very hot and stuffy making me feel sick!!

Boards constantly updated to show wait times Clear area for making enquiries, who directed you on if they could on answer. Staff has a caring nature and were gentle and supportive, particularly when dealing with patient anxiety.

Suggested improvements
Change of seating when patients are waiting. The type of seating was causing the patients condition to become worse.

After being told at 5am I was being admitted my partner went home to sleep after 24 hora with no food or sleep, I was then told at 5.45 that I was being discharged and told to leave the department. Advise on leaving was not to be alone for fear of falls, not to drive and to collect medication from a pharmacy once it had opened. I was told not to go out alone but also don’t stay home alone, so how was it safe to send me home alone? Due to being so ill on returning home my daughter rang the hospital to ask if I had discharged myself as she didn’t feel any medical professional would send me home in the state I am in, the nurse she spoke to clarified that I was discharged as medically fit to leave unsupervised, but on reviewing the notes she advised that I should be brought back in by ambulance. I have not retuned to the hospital as I feel they will just keep me on a chair for 14- 16 hours with no pain relief and no food ( I am diabetic) then discharge me home again.

Suggested improvements
Ensure either my safe return home or admit me as was originally stated. Food and regular sugar checks for known diabetics, pain relief when requested.
